Liberals: You're Letting Trump Under Your Skin
When Trump insults minorities or makes a tasteless joke, I understand the desire to yell about it. To call him and his supporters stupid, racist or crazy. It feels like you're doing your part. That you're helping the fight against Trump.
You're actually playing into Trump's hands. He wants you to insult him and his supporters. He's not trying to get your support: He's trying to strengthen his support from the people that don't like you. The people that love when Trump gets under your skin.
Trump's supporters haven't liked you long before Trump was President. They think you look down on them. They think that you think they're all a bunch of hicks and red necks. This resentment has been building years before Trump went down the escalator. The angriest ones call you Communists and pedophiles, probably because they're too hurt to tell you that they're hurt.
By yelling at Trump and Trump supporters, you're strengthening Trump's support.
It's okay that you didn't know that you were accidently building Trump's support. All the Liberal gurus and comedians still don't know this. You didn't do it on purpose and the past is the past. The question now is what are you going to do now? Are you going to keep playing Trump's game and losing?
What if you threw Trump a curve ball? This will take bravery on your part. What if you reached out to the Trump supporter in your life? Someone you probably haven't had a reasonable conversation with for a long time. Tell them "You probably hate Liberals or anybody who doesn't like Trump. I'd like to understand your point of view. I don't have to agree but I want to listen to your reasons."
They will probably say things that you don't agree with. That will piss you off. Take deep breaths and try to listen. Try not to judge or try to justify anything. Just hear their side. They might ask for your thoughts on MAGA. Try to be respectful of their beliefs while being honest.
Hopefully, this will be the beginning of more reasonable conversations with the Trump supporter in your life. Maybe they'll start to see that you don't look down on them. And you'll start to see that they're not stupid, racist or crazy. And then, finally, you'll do something that really beats Trump at his own game.
